NEW March 2022: A Maurice Griffiths Eventide Disposal

One of the boats that caught my imagination as a lad was the 24′ Eventide. Designed by the well-known designer Maurice Griffiths back in the 50s. Some were built professionally, but most were built in people’s back gardens and the like. Designed for the Essex muddy river scene northeast of London, they were a no-brainer choice for Morecambe Bay sailors back in the day.

We’ve had many examples at Wardley’s Creek over the years. But unfortunately, wooden boats need lots of loving tender care to keep them tip-top, and the nostalgic twinkle in the eye enthusiasts inclined to do the painting, corking, and varnishing are, like the boat, a dying breed.

This one has been around since I joined the club in 2014. I should imagine many people have felt that prick of strong desire to take her on. Still, after sleeping on it, they’ve looked around elsewhere and seen that there is always something a bit better, more modern, roomier inside, and made of PLASTIC.

I’m guessing that the late Eventide, bless her, outlived the man (or woman) who proudly first laid the keel–all those years ago.

River Wyre Safety Group, May 2021

This group has regular meetings, involving Wyre Borough Council, the police, coastguard and other interested stakeholders, including our club. The group aims to control irresponsible and potentially dangerous use of craft on the river, mostly involving excessive speed. If any club member witnesses any incidents of this nature, please do let us know, and we can feed the information back to the group.

Club house reopening, due June 21ST 2021

Club House Re-opening

We hope to be able to re-open the clubhouse on June 21st, which is the date on the government’s roadmap when lockdown restrictions are planned to be lifted. It has been suggested that we could refresh the interior of the clubhouse ready for the re-opening. If you have any ideas for colour schemes or improvements which we could achieve by that date, please let us know. Also, if any member can offer assistance, advice or skills in the areas of furnishing, flooring and decoration, please get in touch.

CRANE IN, due may 27th, 2021

Just a reminder that our provisional date for craning in this year is Thursday 27th May. Will any member wishing to use the crane please let us know ASAP, if you haven’t already done so. Please also take note that the majority of the yard will be taped off on the day, and not accessible for activities not connected with craning. The yard will be a hard-hat area during craning. Food and refreshment will be provided by a Covide-19 compliant team operating from in the club house. Note that club house is still out of bounds for general navigation, and the toilet round the back remains uni-sex for the time being.
